America is headed for a rerun of the 2020 election in 2024—no, we are not (yet) discussing Joe Biden versus Donald Trump.
Super Bowl LVIII, or Super Bowl 58 for those who are not into Roman numerals, will pit the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch from 2020.
The Chiefs defeated the 49ers 31–20 in Super Bowl 54 on February 2, 2020, marking the team’s first-ever Super Bowl victory. Now, the Chiefs are participating in their fourth Super Bowl overall and their sixth in the last five years, while San Francisco is hosting its eighth Super Bowl.
Following their respective conference title games on Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will square off in the NFL championship game once more when they travel.
The quarterback of the next generation, Patrick Mahomes, and tight end Travis Kelce, who has lit up the fields and the tabloids this year with his forceful performances and attention-grabbing relationship with singer and TIME Person of the Year, Taylor Swift, lead the Chiefs, the defending Super Bowl champions who defeated the 49ers four years ago.
Running back Christian McCaffrey, whose outstanding season has so far broken franchise and NFL records, and divisive quarterback Brock Purdy, who has responded to widespread criticism of his apparent mediocrity with consistently remarkable stats and key comebacks, lead the 49ers.
In football’s final meeting of the 2023–2024 season, both teams and their star players will be hoping to create history—as will the NFL. The Super Bowl last year was the most watched U.S. telecast ever, but with viewership rising this year, that record may just be broken.

What kind of Super Bowl advertisements can we anticipate?
The Super Bowl is known as much for its commercials as for the action that happens between the commercial breaks. AdWeek confirms that the expensive spots in the program are almost sold out this year, and companies have already released teases of their star-studded ads. For instance, mayonnaise manufacturer Hellmann’s is teasing an ad featuring comedian and cat lady Kate McKinnon. Beer brand Michelob Ultra is putting soccer star and TIME Athlete of the Year Lionel Messi front and center. Meanwhile, gambling facilitator BetMGM is sharing its entire 60-second teaser teasing actor Vince Vaughn, who says recently retired quarterback Tom Brady has “won too much” and should “let others have their turn.”
Which Super Bowl odds are available?
Bookmakers have the 49ers as the favorite, with an opening spread of about 2 points; but, that might change in the days leading up to gameday.
Who will be playing at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2024?
The R&B icon Usher was revealed in September of last year as the main act for the Apple Music-sponsored Super Bowl halftime show.
The 2024 Super Bowl halftime show will feature eight-time Grammy winner and minority owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers Usher. According to USA TODAY, Usher has always wanted to perform in the halftime show.
The singer released a statement saying, “I can not wait to present the world a concert unlike anything else they have seen from me before. It is an honor of a lifetime to finally tick a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list.”
The 45-year-old eight-time Grammy winner, who will release his ninth album, “Coming Home,” on February 9, said, “I can not wait to present the world a show unlike anything else they have seen from me before. It is an honor of a lifetime to finally tick a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list.”
Although none have been formally revealed yet, famous guests have occasionally joined the main act in the past. LeBron James, J Balvin, and Jung Kook of BTS were all included in a teaser film that was published in January.
Prior to the game, there will be multiple performances. The national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which will be led by country musician Reba McEntire, will be followed by a performance of “America the Beautiful” by hip-hop artist Post Malone, and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as “the Black national anthem” and a staple of Super Bowl pregame festivities since 2021, by actress and soul singer Andra Day.
At the Super Bowl, will Taylor Swift be present?
Though social media users have already calculated that she could theoretically still make it back across the world in time, Swift, who has become a fixture at her boyfriend Kelce’s games and was present to celebrate the Chiefs victory against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday to advance to the Super Bowl, has not yet confirmed whether or not she will be in Las Vegas on February 11. The pop sensation’s Eras Tour concert in Tokyo is scheduled for February 10.
Who prevailed in last year’s Super Bowl?
The Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles faced off in Super Bowl 57 last year, with Kansas City emerging victorious 38-35.
After his incredible return, Brock Purdy becomes a 49ers legend, leaving Detroit Lions hero Jared Goff to wonder what might have been.
In the 2022 NFL Draft, Brock Purdy waited more than three days to hear his name called dead last, earning the unflattering moniker “Mr. Irrelevant,” which is bestowed upon the final player selected in each year’s draft.
The quarterbacks who have guided the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl, including Joe Montana, Steve Young, Colin Kaepernick, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Brock Purdy, are names that are sometimes forgotten, but on Sunday, he joined a new list that will redefine his legacy.
In a match between two field generals who could not have had more dissimilar career starts but appeared to follow comparable routes to reach the NFC Championship Game, Purdy prevailed over the Detroit Lions and their quarterback, Jared Goff.
Goff, a native of the Bay Area who grew up in Santa Clara, around 70 miles from Levi’s Stadium, had traveled a long way to reach one of the largest stages in sports. He turned the historically dismal Lions into one of their best seasons ever and, in the process, became a local hero in the Motor City.
Two years ago, nobody would have ventured to wager that Purdy and Goff would be leading their teams toward a Super Bowl appearance. In fact, few outside of the Bay Area and Ames, Iowa (the hometown of Purdy’s alma mater, Iowa State University) would have even been aware of his identity.
In addition to leading his team to the Super Bowl, Purdy made history in the NFC Championship game by coming back from a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat the Detroit Lions 34-31 and advance his team to play the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas. He is now regarded as a 49ers legend in the making.
Purdy’s stat line, which consists of five 48-yard rushes and 20-of-31 throw attempts for 267 yards with a touchdown and an interception, does not look impressive.
However, Purdy became the third-youngest quarterback to ever lead his team to the Super Bowl because of the timing of those plays, especially the scrambles that cracked the Lions defense during the second-half surge.
After the game, Purdy remarked, “Honestly, it is simply a tribute to God and where he is taken me in life. I have never been the biggest, the quickest, the strongest, or anything like that.”
But God has always given me a chance, whether it is in high school, college, or the NFL. Being drafted last is just one example of how all you need is a chance, and then you just have to see what he can do. I put my faith and trust in him, and he is brought me here.”
Not “Irrelevant” anymore
Purdy, 24, is one of those unique tales that football fans sometimes imagine, one that lets a relative unknown shine in the largest and brightest lights.
As with Kurt Warner and Warren Moon, Purdy has emerged swiftly from relative obscurity to become the starting quarterback for one of the league’s iconic teams, even if he was picked even if it was with the penultimate pick.
The Iowa State product took the ball and ran with it, going 5-0 as the starting quarterback before being hurt in last year’s NFC Championship Game. The 49ers forced the Iowa State product into action in the 2022 season after starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and backup quarterback Trey Lance were both injured earlier in the season.
“They have supported me since I took over from last year,” Purdy said of his teammates prior to Sunday’s game. “I feel like I have matured this year, and we have all matured together. I feel really fortunate to have these guys in the locker room with me, and they have definitely been there for me through the good times and the bad.”
The 49ers management office ultimately opted to back Purdy after he put up a strong showing. Three quarterbacks had guided the team to victory in 2022, but there was only place for one starter.
After Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, Garoppolo was free to sign with the Raiders in the offseason. Purdy was the team’s undisputed starter going into training camp, and together they helped the 49ers win a division, secure the #1 seed in the NFC, and now advance to the Super Bowl.
When the Chiefs play them, his teammates are complete believers.
49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk stated, “He is got nerves of steel, so I am not worried about his age. He is clearly mature above his years and I know he will be ready.”
Running back Christian McCaffrey stated, “I do not have enough positive things to say about Brock,” following the game.
We are fortunate to have him as our quarterback. He receives a lot of criticism without cause; all he has accomplished since coming here is play at an exceptional level and lead by example.
Even with two NFC Championship Games under his belt and a complete season as the starter, Purdy is still relatively unknown; unlike the team’s other notable stars, his biography is still missing from the 49ers website.
That most likely will not remain the same.
Returning from the edge
Goff was supposed to be the mainstay of the Los Angeles Rams for many years to come after being selected first overall in the 2016 draft, and for a while it appeared like that plan was on track.
Even though Goff failed at the last hurdle, it appeared likely that the Rams were just getting started. In his third season, he led the team to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the New England Patriots in one of the most offensively difficult Super Bowls in history (the game finished 13-3).
However, Goff’s playing surface was gradually changing, and as the seasons went on, it became less and less likely that he would be the Rams’ quarterback of the future.
The Rams determined after the 2020 campaign that Goff was not good enough, and they executed a trade that sent him to Detroit in exchange for the legendary Matthew Stafford of the Lions, who, having spent 12 seasons in Motown, desired to move to a Super Bowl-winning team.
And he did: the following year. In the meantime, Goff and the Lions went winless for the first thirteen weeks of the season, ultimately going 3-13-1 in Dan Campbell’s first season as head coach. Stafford became successful right away, and Goff found himself on a losing team in a city accustomed to losing.
After that first season, Lions supporters were skeptical and unsure about Goff’s longevity going into the 2022 season. While a potent offense looked to allay some of those doubts, the team’s 1-6 start to the season left them feeling as though nothing had really changed.
However, the wins began to pile up in November 2022. The offense continued to be prolific and began making plays that were necessary to win close games in a way that was very unlike anything the Lions had ever done before. This created a surge of enthusiasm that culminated in the greatest season the majority of fans had ever seen.
Although Goff became good enough for Detroit, as Campbell told him in the locker room after he led the Lions to their first postseason victory in thirty-two years, the chorus of “Ja-red Goff!” chants that have been booming across sporting events in Michigan for the past several weeks is proof of that.
