Among them were Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, along with first lady Teresa Parson and governor Mike Parson of Missouri.
Gov. Parson wrote on X, the previous Twitter platform, “Our hearts go out to the victims as we wait to learn more. State law enforcement personnel are aiding local authorities in response operations.”
Mayor Lucas stated that the Chiefs had communicated with authorities and that all of the team’s members—players, coaches, and staff—were present and safe.
After learning of the tragedy, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who had been riding triumphantly through the city only hours earlier, also rushed to social media, posting, “Praying for Kansas City…”
As the squad members rode a bus through the downtown area of the city, thousands of fans dressed in the team’s red, gold, and white colors cheered them on.
The procession was set to commence at 11 a.m. local time, and at 12:45 p.m., Union Station planned to host a rally immediately following the parade.
At about 2:30 p.m. CST, shots were reported by the police.
This tragedy follows a record-breaking year for homicides in Kansas City in 2023, as reported by KCUR. With 185 confirmed killings last year, the city surpassed the previous mark established in 2020.
