Adan Carrillo will be the first to admit that it was a little awkward to watch his new R-rated sports comedy, The Underdoggs, with his parents. Rapper Snoop Dogg plays a football coach for a motley crew of misfits in the movie.

Starring with Adan is Tony, a young football player trained by Snoop Dogg, who gives each player a moniker. Tony’s shirt is emblazoned with a coarse colloquial phrase that serves as his moniker. Snoop Dogg and the kids in the film drop so many F-bombs that Joe Pesci from Goodfellas would definitely blush.

“Oh, do not show me! I was like that the first time we watched it. I would prefer not to see! 13-year-old Adan told MySA in a recent interview. “There were some embarrassing moments, but it is cool to watch the end product.”

Dan knows from experience as an actor that each job he auditions for will be unique. He and his father discussed The Underdoggs and came to the conclusion that, despite the profanity in the film, he would be able to gain more experience in the field he wants to pursue professionally by working on a production with Snoop Dogg.

According to Carrillo, it was challenging to say those things in front of his dad during the audition, but using profanity didn’t bother him.

Dan’s father, Erick Carrillo, works as an actor. His most well-known performance was in the 1997 biopic Selena as “First Cholo.” The most memorable thing about him is that he was the one who gave Jennifer Lopez the famous quote, “Anything for Salinas,” in the scene where Selena’s tour bus gets bogged in the mud.

“I first heard [my dad] talk about Selena when I was approximately eight years old,” Adan remembers. But it was not until I was around eleven years old, at an event where he was signing shirts and posters, that I realized how big the line was. With that one line, he sort of stole the show.

In his brief professional life, Adan has already secured roles in television shows such as NCIS: Hawaii, This Fool, The Lincoln Lawyer, and Mayans M.C. In the 2023 comedic film About My Father, he costarred with two-time Academy Award winner Robert De Niro (Raging Bull). Adan claimed that De Niro told him something that he would always treasure after they finished filming a sequence.

“You are a good actress, child,” he said to me when he approached me. You will achieve great things. Continue. Keep it out of your mind. Remain modest, Dan said. It was thrilling to hear Robert De Niro say that to me.

Dan is now excited to explore where his acting career would take him and to heed his father’s advise regarding the business. He claimed that he and his father frequently make jokes about how famous he would become.

“You know, I wonder if one day I am going to be bigger than you,” Dan would occasionally say to him. “You will always be second best, kid, as long as I am there,” he says to me every time. I truly feel as though I am carrying on his legacy.

Right now, Amazon Prime is offering streaming for The Underdoggs.
