According to media reports, a series of strong earthquakes shook western areas of Japan on Monday, and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning along the coastal regions of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures. The earthquake’s preliminary magnitude was 7.6, and it struck north-central Japan.

A 7.4 preliminary magnitude earthquake struck Ishikawa and neighboring prefectures, according to the Japan Meterological Agency, and Hokuriku Electric Power stated that it is investigating any anomalies at its nuclear power facilities, as reported by Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV.

After the earthquake struck the Noto region in Ishikawa prefecture at 4:10 pm (0710 GMT), national broadcaster NHK declared, “All residents must evacuate immediately to higher ground.”

Following the 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Japan, the meteorological agency in South Korea warned that sea levels would rise in some areas of the country’s east coast.

NHK TV warned torrents of water could reach as high as 5 meters (16.5 feet) and urged people to flee to high land or a top of a nearby building as quickly as possible.

According to NHK, Hokuriku Electric Power said it is examining any anomalies at its nuclear power facilities.

As for Kansai Electric Power, a spokesman said the company is keeping a close eye on the situation but that there are currently no anomalies at any of its nuclear power facilities.
